The release of two important BIM standards has been long awaited in the BIM community all over the world and although only released by ISO in December, there have been a variety of discussions and debates as to what this means to the UK and Global Construction Industry.

I’ll be at BIM Show Live 2019 in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK on Wednesday 27 February and in my seminar session I will be discussing how BIM standards ultimately can drive consistency in regions with little or no guides and also how an international standard like this one will ultimately benefit all regions.

My session will also touch on the application of the UK BIM Standards globally, which is an advancement of my session at last year’s show where I discussed the different methodologies behind how some regions are using and applying the UK BIM Standards. There is much debate about how the UK Standards can be used now globally when it comes to BIM and if the ISO supersedes this.

The ISO will be supplemented from January by a series of supporting guidance documents such as a UK National Annex which will help those transitioning from the use of the UK Standards and framework for BIM Level 2. There is much debate about the maturity, and we’ll keep you up to date on how many regions can begin to use different language when it comes to measuring BIM, something that is causing much confusion and disarray.

The UK is only one region in this global puzzle and therefore many of those working in this region won’t see the practical nature of trying to transition from a ‘preferred’ standard (or recommended one) such as PAS 1192-2 to the ISO outside the UK. This has already caused huge amounts of confusion for regions such as Asia and Australia where there is no real education when it comes to the transitioning piece.

At BIM Show Live I’ll be discussing how this can be achieved and the impacts of existing BIM processes and language which tend to filter through and provide ambiguity and confusion for industry. In regions like the USA, this is especially difficult due to the jurisdiction and the scale of the nation.

We hope to pull apart and dissect how practically the application of ISO will support industry globally and how to effectively use this standard as a premise for industry in a variety of regions globally to support consistency in process, method and application of BIM.

My talk at BIM Show Live is at 11:15am (GMT) Wednesday 27 February: A global BIM solution? The realities of the application of ISO 19650 across the globe.

And if you want more in-depth knowledge on how to the new ISO will benefit your organisation, check out our new training programmes.
