Government of South Australia

The Government of South Australia’s Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) commissioned Digital Node to develop a strategic framework which will support the implementation of BIM across DPTI’s  sector for Building Projects.

Utilising an international framework, DPTI committed to creating an opportunity where it could develop internal BIM capability and drive efficiencies throughout their supply chain. We worked very closely with them to develop a strategy which supports the wider implementation of BIM and Digital Engineering.

There was an immediate need to address how DPTI could increase it’s BIM knowledge, given that other government departments throughout Australia where already beginning to adopt BIM solutions across their assets.

The Building Projects sector of DPTI works in partnership with government agencies and industry to manage the delivery of social infrastructure (building construction) projects, providing project management, budget risk management, construction advice, design risk management and professional services in architecture, engineering and heritage architecture. Therefore it was essential they delivered these with maximum efficiencies.

Our project, which began in November 2017, had three key areas of focus:

  1. Carry out a review of the existing BIM Processes and systems in place within DPTI Building Projects and how these are being implemented.
  2. Deliver a series of workshops to define the key benefits for DPTI regarding the implementation of BIM.
  3. Produce a recommendations paper regarding the implementation of BIM within the sector and how these areas can be addressed and reviewed for future implementation.

The review and workshops addressed the above mentioned critical services that Building Projects provide, where our Director, Rebecca De Cicco, documented and recorded all key information shared to her by the department for use to then intelligently assess what the implementation would look like on a strategic front.

The workshops were held with key stakeholders within DPTI and the agencies who support it. They included all of those involved in the project management side as well as individuals from other areas of the sector such as Asset Management.

The findings and recommendations developed within the paper have supported the implementation of BIM across a variety of projects within DPTI and the aim is for it to further support wider governmental initiatives when it comes to the application of BIM across both Buildings and Infrastructure.
